Capital of China
The capital of china confused me the other day. I’m really good with capitals for some reason. I was interested as a child in learning all the capitals of the states and as many around the world as I could. I still know a lot of them so every year around the holidays at some point someone starts trying to stump me on a capital. This year I got china wrong!! How stupid is that? Who doesn’t know the capital of china unless you are a fucking moron like me. I said the capital of china was peking. It used to be indeed the capital of china but it’s not anymore. Well it still is but it’s not called peking. Are you confused now? Good, now I don’t feel so stupid. Let me explain. Peking and Beijing are the same city. In my old atlas that my great grandmother gave me when I was 7 the capital was listed as peking. So that’s the way I learned it. Her atlas was from the 1930’s and I still have it. Now they call the capital of china not peking like they used to but beijing instead. Although on the postal maps in china it is still peking. It also has to do with the way the chinese traditionally name their capitals. It’s a translation thing but bottom line is that now the capital of china is beijing.
